Job Description

Overview:

At BHSI, we believe in empowering our customers to navigate a world full of uncertainty. Property and Casualty (P&C) Insurance plays a vital role in helping individuals and businesses manage risk by transferring potential financial losses to insurers. At the core of P&C insurance operations is the actuary—an essential contributor who analyzes data, quantifies risk, and helps design pricing strategies that ensure financial stability while protecting policyholders.

Are you thinking about a career in the P&C insurance industry? This is your opportunity to join BHSI’s entry level training program. Join us in building a forever business!

We invite you to learn more about our unique culture and history.

Opportunity:

As an Actuarial Assistant joining our North American Executive & Professional “E&P” Division and Global Actuarial Team in our New York City (NYC) office, you will engage in a wide variety of projects, with a heavy emphasis on profitability studies, the enhancement of technical actuarial raters, and the analysis of large, internal loss and exposure datasets.

This is a great opportunity for (2026) graduates or anyone transitioning into insurance who enjoy analytical thinking, problem-solving, and working with data.

You’ll receive comprehensive training in actuarial principles, insurance regulations, and industry tools. You will work alongside experienced seasoned actuaries and mentors who will support your development every step of the way.

If you’re detail-oriented, curious, and eager to learn, we’ll help you build a strong foundation in a stable and rewarding career.

Accountabilities:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain quantitative diagnostic tools to be used by underwriters and actuaries in pricing individual risks and managing a portfolio of business.
  • Provide insights into the company’s business using the combination of tools needed to best complete each task (e.g. SQL queries, Excel).
  • Help optimize existing processes and data structures by designing and writing new code.
  • Provide technical support, as needed, to underwriters in Excel and SQL.
  • Collaborate with offshore resources to improve business processes and increase efficiency.
  • Collaborate with other departments, such as Underwriting, IT, and Claims, in the development and integration of actuarial systems that are evolving as the company continues its growth.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent training; with proven math and analytical skills as normally acquired through the pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, economics, actuarial science, or related field.
  • A commitment to pursuing the FCAS designation; successful completion of two actuarial exams is preferred.
  • Proficiency in SQL, R, or similar language is preferred, although not required if candidate has proficiency in other languages or has an aptitude for programing. Advance VBA experience is a plus.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with MS Office Applications (i.e. Word, Excel, etc.), with intermediate to advanced level Excel skills.

Attributes & Values:

  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving
  • High attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Customer-focused mindset
  • Embodies respect, integrity, passion, collaboration, and excellence

BHSI Offers:

  • A competitive package and exciting growth opportunities for career-oriented teammates.
  • A dynamic, action oriented, and thoughtful environment centered on always doing the right thing for our customers, teammates, and our other stakeholders.
  • In office culture, with a high value on collaboration and teamwork.
  • A purposely non-bureaucratic organization that embraces simplicity over complexity and emphasizes individual excellence in a team framework.
  • Benefits that support your life and well-being, which include:
    • Comprehensive Health, Dental and Vision benefits
    • Disability Insurance (both short-term and long-term)
    • Life Insurance (for you and your family)
    • Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance (for you and your family)
    • Flexible Spending Accounts
    • Health Reimbursement Account
    • Employee Assistance Program
    • Retirement Savings 401(k) Plan with Company Match
    • Generous holiday and Paid Time Off
    • Tuition Reimbursement
    • Paid Parental Leave

The base salary for this position in NYC is $75,000, along with annual bonus eligibility. Total compensation for a candidate is determined by their relevant skills, location, and experience. We value our teammates – both their capabilities and character – as demonstrated by our amazing culture.

NOTE: Compensation will be commensurate with experience. This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Team Member may perform other related duties as negotiated to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.
