Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Staff Pharmacist (Research) within the Pharmacy Department at the Rutgers Cancer Institute.

The primary purpose of the Research Staff Pharmacist is to fulfill daily operational responsibilities which assure the safe and effective use of investigational medications in our patients in support of the objectives of the Office of Research Subjects (OHRS). The Research Staff Pharmacist adheres to contemporary standards of practice in fulfilling these responsibilities.

Among the key duties for this position are the following:

  • Collaborates with OHRS, the multidisciplinary medical team, the Sponsors and CROs as required for study activation including site initiation visits, EMR & Vestigo builds, staff education
  • Performs patient management including eligibility review, chart prep prior to treatment, investigational order verification. Maintains current patient specific information (patient profiles) in the prescribed format.
  • Reviews physician orders at the time of receipt for drug related problems. Compares new orders with current patient specific information. Resolves all drug related problems in conference with the prescribing physician, when necessary.
  • Confers with pharmacy colleagues and/or nurses when appropriate to detect, correct or prevent drug related problems.
  • Interviews patients when appropriate in order to obtain relevant clinical information.
  • Prioritizes the processing of medication orders according to clinical importance and other relevant factors.
  • Checks all profile entries for accuracy and completeness.
  • Participates in the preparation and checks all investigation medications prior to dispensing for accuracy and completeness.
  • Controls and dispenses investigational medications under approved protocols. Completes required documentation.
  • Prepares or supervises the preparation of investigational medication(s), when necessary or appropriate; includes chemotherapy, IV piggyback solutions, extemporaneous compounding.
  • Prepares and labels extemporaneously compounded non-sterile research pharmaceuticals including the counting and auditing of oral chemotherapy.
  • Documents and confirms documentation of patients' adherence to oral chemotherapy clinical trials through "pill counts".

  • Must be licensed and registered by the New Jersey State Board Pharmacy.

  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.

  • Chemotherapy preparation requires some exposure to potentially harmful chemicals and medications.
  • Detailed procedures including the use of protective apparatus and equipment are followed to minimize or eliminate exposure.
