Job Description

The Senior Real Estate Development Manager provides strategic leadership and oversight for real estate projects managed by University Real Estate LLC on behalf of the University of Utah. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this role manages and mentors Real Estate Development Managers, providing guidance on project execution and professional growth, while also overseeing external consultants and contractors. This role collaborates closely with the COO and other real estate senior leaders to ensure projects align with financial objectives, and stakeholder priorities. The Senior Manager is accountable for advancing the university’s mission through the planning, acquisition, financing, design, construction, and delivery of major development projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with contractual, regulatory, and other applicable requirements.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership for the planning, acquisition, financing, design, construction, and delivery of real estate development projects.
  • Collaborate with senior real estate leadership team to develop and implement long-term strategies, policies, and priorities.
  • Manage and mentor Real Estate Development Managers, ensuring effective project execution and professional growth.
  • Oversee and coordinate external consultants, contractors, and other project partners.
  • Ensure all projects align with financial objectives and stakeholder priorities.
  • Monitor project budgets, schedules, contracts, and performance metrics to ensure timely, cost-effective delivery.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory, contractual, and other applicable requirements across all phases of development.
  • Support board reporting and other internal communication by providing project updates, performance data, and strategic insights.
  • Promote sustainable design, construction practices, and operational efficiency.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in real estate, business administration, finance, architecture, engineering, construction management, or a related field required; master’s degree preferred.
  • 8–10 years of progressively responsible experience in real estate development, project management, or related fields, with demonstrated success managing large-scale development projects.
  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience required; experience mentoring and managing professional staff strongly preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong understanding of real estate development processes, including acquisition, entitlements, financing, design, and construction.
  • Proven ability to manage complex budgets, schedules, and contracts across multiple projects.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills with the ability to mentor and develop staff.
  • Strong analytical, financial, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with internal teams, consultants, contractors, and governing boards.
  • Knowledge of sustainability and best practices.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • High level of integrity, judgment, and professionalism.
