Network Engineer

Southeast New Mexico College (SENMC) 

 

Required : Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field; with two (2) years of professional experience as a Network Engineer, Systems Engineer, or in a similar IT role. Strong understanding of networking protocols and services (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, BGP, OSPF, etc.).

Equivalency:  Relevant industry certifications (e.g., CCNA, CCNP, CompTIA Network+, JNCIA, Palo Alto, Fortinet) combined with significant professional experience may substitute for formal education requirements. Any equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience as approved by the Human Resources Department.

Salary: $66,202.36 - $91,422.07 DOE

Located in Carlsbad, New Mexico, Southeast New Mexico College (SENMC) is a newly independent public community college accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. A proud Hispanic Serving Institution, it awards certificates and associate degrees that serve the needs of its region and prepare students to transfer to programs at other colleges or universities. SENMC offers Early College and Dual Credit programs in collaboration with local high schools.

Purpose and Scope:

Southeast New Mexico College (SENMC) is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Network Engineer to join our Technology Services and Solutions Department. This position is responsible for the design, implementation, management, and maintenance of the college’s network infrastructure to ensure reliable, secure, and efficient connectivity across the institution. The Network Engineer will bring strong technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and a collaborative mindset to support SENMC’s mission of providing excellence in education and services.

Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Design, configure, and maintain LAN, WAN, WLAN, and VPN networks to support academic and administrative operations.

  • Implement, configure, and manage firewalls, switches, routers, and other network security devices.

  • Monitor and optimize network performance to ensure high availability, reliability, and scalability.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, and network issues in a timely manner.

  • Utilize network monitoring tools and follow best practices to maintain network health.

  • Collaborate with IT leadership, systems administrators, and security teams to align networking solutions with organizational needs and compliance standards.

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date network documentation, including diagrams, procedures, and inventory.

  • Conduct regular system updates, patches, and preventive maintenance.

  • Monitor and address cybersecurity threats; implement measures to safeguard network systems.

  • Research, evaluate, and recommend emerging technologies to enhance network performance and efficiency.

  • Provide technical guidance and support to IT staff and campus stakeholders.

  • Participate in disaster recovery planning and testing to ensure business continuity.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Strong knowledge of networking concepts, protocols, and technologies (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, VPN, etc.).

  • Proficiency in configuring and maintaining enterprise-level network equipment (routers, switches, firewalls, wireless access points).

  • Hands-on experience with enterprise networking hardware, including Cisco, Juniper, or equivalent devices.

  • Knowledge of cybersecurity practices, including intrusion detection, prevention systems, and endpoint security.

  • Experience with network monitoring and diagnostic tools.

  • Ability to design and implement secure, scalable, and efficient networking solutions.

  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills for working with technical and non-technical staff.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize workloads, and work independently or collaboratively.

  • Attention to detail and commitment to documenting procedures and processes.
