Under the general direction of a Caltrans Maintenance Area Superintendent, the incumbent will supervise and work with a crew engaged in various highway and landscape maintenance tasks, while enforcing safety and health policies and procedures as outlined in the Department’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP). The incumbent should be knowledgeable in environmental regulations, storm water management, emergency response, natural disaster protocols, accident prevention techniques, principles of effective supervision, and safe work practices.
The incumbent operates light vehicles and equipment requiring a valid Class C Driver’s License as used by the assigned unit. Overtime, irregular shifts, and alternate work schedules including nights, holidays, and weekends may be required. The incumbent may also be required to work temporary and/or intermittent varied shifts and must be available to respond to emergency situations and calls. This classification requires a valid and unrestricted Class C Driver’s License. A Class A or B Driver’s License with a Tanker endorsement, a current medical certificate, and possession of a Qualified Applicator Certificate are desirable. Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment. This position is based at a Maintenance Station in a climate-controlled environment under artificial lights, many duties will be spent outdoors. Weather conditions vary from a cold windy and wet winter climate to a very hot and dry summer climate. May be exposed to dirt, dust, fumes, hot materials, chemicals, loud noises, inclement weather, steep, uneven, and/or unstable terrain, fast moving traffic, and/or extreme temperatures. May be required to sit or stand for long periods of time. May be exposed to or put in stressful situations. Will be required to wear long pants and appropriate footwear in good condition, and must wear the provided personal protective safety equipment including but not limited to: shirts or vests, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, face shields, respirators, ear plugs, as well as other safety devices deemed necessary. The incumbent will be required to travel extensively throughout the assigned area and may be required to travel and work in other areas in the District. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a State owned or leased vehicle.
