The Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) is seeking a detail-oriented and collaborative Costumer I to help bring our productions to life. If you enjoy hands-on costume construction, working in a creative team, and supporting world-class theatre, this seasonal role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the artistry that happens behind the scenes.

The Role You’ll Play

As a Costumer I, you’ll construct and alter garments, jewelry, hats, and accessories, following the designs and direction of OSF’s costume leadership team. You’ll also help maintain costume shop organization, support fittings and production needs, and assist with rental garments. This role is fundamental to ensuring OSF productions are beautifully built, safe, and performance-ready.

What You’ll Do
  • Construct and alter costumes, accessories, and craft elements under the guidance of Lead Drapers, Stitchers, and Craft/Dyers.

  • Create prototypes and samples as assigned; process fabrics and garments as needed.

  • Support fittings, load-ins, openings, closings, and costume maintenance.

  • Participate in the upkeep and sanitization of costume shop spaces, equipment, and inventory.

  • Assist with costume rentals, rental repairs, and supply pick-ups/deliveries.

  • Model OSF’s values of equity, diversity, and inclusion by fostering a safe and respectful work environment.

You’ll Thrive Here If You…
  • Have at least 1 year of experience in costume construction .

  • Are open to instruction, able to communicate clearly, and comfortable with both written and verbal directions.

  • Can handle a variety of fabrics and materials using industrial sewing machines and shop tools.

  • Have some familiarity with craft and dye techniques.

  • Practice safe shop and backstage standards.

  • Are comfortable with Microsoft Office and cloud-based systems.

  • Can balance multiple projects, meet deadlines, and pivot quickly when plans change.

Preferred Skills
  • Knowledge of global garment and costume history.

  • Experience communicating respectfully about body proportions, textures, tones, and genders in fitting and design contexts.

Physical & Schedule Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs, climb stairs occasionally, and sit or stand for extended periods.

  • Standard schedule: Tuesday – Saturday, 9:00 am – 6:00 pm (overtime may be required with prior approval).

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) was founded in 1935 in Ashland, OR, and has grown from a three-day festival of two plays to a nationally renowned theatre arts organization that presents a rotating repertory season of up to 10 plays and musicals, including illuminating interpretations of Shakespeare, other enduring classics, and new works. OSF productions have been presented on Broadway, internationally, and at regional, community, and high school theatres across the country. OSF received the 1983 Special Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre and is one of the largest nonprofit theatres in the nation with three stages, including an outdoor Allen Elizabethan Theatre.
